Ih 1066 Manual
Hey guys first of all i want to thank everyone for this forum.I am an expierenced mechanic, on cars, light and heavy trucks, but never really messed with tractors. My neighbor has a old 71 ih 1066 that he has brought for me to fix. I would not even know where to begin without this site.so THANK YOU GUYS. The tractor is in pretty good shape other than a few small issues, leaking hydro from the aux valve, mcv, and a few other places.
We are going to tear into it and completely reseal the whole system. He was having trouble with the transmision jumping out of reverse, with all the slack in the shifting linkage i thought that was where i would begin, but after reading a few of these forums I soon knew better. So i began with the basics, draining what started out as hydro fluid. After reading for hours I found all 5 drain plugs and filter location and off i went. When i pulled the axel plugs everything was ok just really milking fluid. But when i pulled the plug from the differental i had 2 chunks of pretty good size fall out, after looking through the part break down at case ih for the whole back end i found the only parts that are even close to looking like them are part of the pto. When i pulled the plug from the transmission the plug hole was packed full of metal shavings.
After looking for hours i can only figure these came from the foward/reverse collar and reverse drive gear. Now as an expierenced mechanic I know better than to tear into anything without first having a backup plan. My backup plan is to see if there is anyone here that may have a service manual posted someone that I can refer to during this surgery.
I am confident that i can do this I just need something to look at from time to time. By the way does anyone know of a good dependable parts supplier?
I live in Oklahoma and the only parts guys around here are crooks. They are marking their prices 100% higher than case list price. Yup from what i can tell from the pictures i need 18 and 20. Those gears have nothing to do with jumping out of reverse. Only common failure with those is 18 will lose teeth from improper park engagement and 20 might gall to the carrier or teeth will wear and jump out of low range.
Have you removed the accessary drive cover from the left side of the rear frame? (shaped sort of like Indiana) This will let you inspect the reverse idler shaft and gears and allow you to look up towards the range main shaft. (pinion gear). If I have to work on the range transmission can I split the tractor between the speed and range transmission or do I have to split the speed first? Just split the speed away from the range or rear frame, as it's called by us old IH guys. Take a good look at the reverse idler shaft, on occasion the washer at the rear of the idler shaft would wear into the rear frame casting. Thicker washers are available to make up the difference but you need to face off the worn area first.
There also can be issues with the key and keyway in the reverse shift shaft and fork that causes lost motion. Does this tractor have a cab?
