Find how right. I just replaced my stock CDV with a modified one and took mg car for a test drive. My God this modification is awesome. For those of you not knowing what the CDV is. It is a valve attached to your clutch that keeps your clutch from engaging if you drop it to quickly. What this leads to is if you try to dump the clutch or are driving 'spiritedly' then the clutch engagement is slow and sloppy. So I replaced the valve with a bored out one, and let me tell you.

Its like driving a new more insane car. Mod your CDV if you have a manual. While BMW does have a team of great engineers, often times, the bean counters are the ones dictating engineering decisions. Not those great engineers. As an engineer myself, and one who has actually designed drivetrain parts, I can say emphatically that the clutch delay valve's purpose is to save car manufacturers money. They are not an engineering necessity. The alternative to using them is to design a drive train that can withstand shock loads over the projected life of the car.

That's far more expensive. You don't have to be a genius driver to drive a manual car without a CDV, you just need to not launch the shit out of it. The thing is.

Do Audi's or Merc's have these delay valves too? It seems like a plain old 325 or 318 should be able to handle someone dumping the clutch all day long without the car falling apart. An M3 or M5 on the other hand might require protection from a new driver.

I just don't see BMW putting the valve in there to protect against human error when the cost is hurting the driving experience. The company motto is Ultimate Driving Machine. For some reason I just keep thinking that the cars arn't really built to take much so they have to put in the safety devices. Eh, I'll shut up now. I may take mine out one day b/c I'd really like to see what difference it makes. The e46 is rather frustrating to drive at times. Your notion isn't illogical, very hard driving will take its toll on certain components of the car, and these cars have been known to have rear subframe issues.

I think that BMW thought the CDV would make the car feel smoother for less experienced drivers, I don't think they expected as many people to notice it or realize how much of a difference it made in the driving experience. Here's some food for thought, the E46 M3 came with an SMG trans, capable of slamming gears in miliseconds, each one accompanied by what feels like god's sledgehammer hitting the rear bumper.

If they are confident enough to sell the cars with that setup, you have no reason to worry about your car falling apart without a CDV. Also, just because you take the valve out doesn't mean you have to start doing burnouts at every stoplight. Here are some cars that have a CDV: E39 5-Series: 525i, 528i, 530i, 540i (1997-2003) E46 M3: (Late 2002, all 2003-2006), ZCP Model E46 3-Series: (1999-2005) 320i, 325i, 330i E53 X5: 3.0i (1999-2006) E60 5-Series: 525i, 530d, 530i, 535i, 545i, 550i (2004-2009) E63/64 6-Series: 645Ci, 650Ci (2004-2010) E81/E82/E87 1-Series: 135i (2008-2010) E82 1 M (2011-2012) E83 X3 2.5, 3.0 (2004-2009) E90/91/92/93 3-Series (2005-2010) 325i, 328i, 330i, 335i Z3 2.5i, 3.0i (1999-2002) Z4 2.5i, 3.0i, 3.0si (2003-2009) Z4 M Coupe/Roadster (2006-2009) Z8 (1999-2003).
