Bmw 1150r 2004 Manual

Posted on by  admin

Hey guys, need some info, i'm at school right now and the firewall here is all kinds of freaky and the search option never works here.i'm extremely close to buying a 2004 bmw r 1150r, silver, with hard bags.15K miles on it. I'd be 2nd owner, and i'm getting it for 7400 OTD.i looked up kbb on the bike and it retails for 7140 before any extra fees doc, tax, etc. I'm coming from my first bike, which was an 07 triumph bonneville 865cc. I wanted something better suited for distance riding, and this looks like this fits the bill for longer rides, and also enough power to satisfy 2 up riding comfortably. I also want to use the bike as a commuter, so it needs to be comfortable in traffic and at lower speeds and get good MPG.

I love the styling of the bike, and how it looks. I'm going to see it in person tomorrow. Only bike i've ever rode is an 07 f650gs, and the bikes ergonomics fit me perfectly. Any you guys can comment on the weight, commuter capability, wheter or not i'm getting a good deal? I'd appreciate it! I'll try the search when i get home lol. Price is OK, but not stellar.

Does it have ABS? Any chance it has aftermarket shocks?? I average 50 mpg when on a trip and low-to-mid 40's when commuting.

Usually 175-200 before the light comes on. I bought mine a year ago and it came with hard bags, motolights, hyperlights, BRAKE!

Light, and some little soft bag mount thing that goes on the luggage rack. I've added a small windshield, a tank bag, a little pelican box on the luggage rack, and a set of Ohlins shocks.

As far as maintenance, it's very easy to work on (tires/oil/etc). Issues I've had were a starter that failed and a few bad coils that caused a rough idle. Put about 12K miles on it since I bought it, and I like the bike pretty well. Price is OK, but not stellar.

My freind has a GS1150, 02, uses it to commute and just ride. Honda rancher trx350te manual. No problems, change the oil, adjust the valves, start it and go.

I think most bikes now are pretty damn good, test ride it, make um a low ball offer if you like it and meet in the middle. All mechanical objects are a crapshoot, but your odds are way better at having a good one than a bad, no matter what you ride.

Had a Strom before the R and the R is much nicer in traffic, less top heavy and just as realiable so far. Next one might be a Guzzi, just cause they look cool, if I wanted cheap I'd get a geo metro.but WTF fun would that be. I rode a 2004 R1150R for 13,000 trouble-free miles. I did the oil and filter changes myself and thought they were easy cheezy. It is a great bike for longer rides and you can fit enough wind protection to make them just as comfortable as an RT (IMO). I had a sargent seat on mine and managed some 600 mile days with no real issues. The OTD price might be a little high, but if he can give you service records and the bike looks well taken care of, it should serve you very well for a long time to come.

For the record, I sold mine because I was waiting for a F800GS. When the release got delayed I ended up getting a Triumph Scrambler. You know, I wouldn't hesitate to put long miles on the Scram either.

Both great bikes. You might find the RR a little more comfy over the long haul. I think you might find that it feels quite a bit bigger / heavier at low speeds though. Once she's moving she'll be well balanced and stable. I rode a black 'R' for three years and found it to be a terrific all 'rounder. I put a Corbin saddle on I bought through eBay and a Throttlemeister cruise control, but those were the only mods.

I always felt like I was sitting 'in' the bike rather than on it, the way the tanks, bars and controls kind of surround you. I felt real secure in commuter traffic too, for the same reason. The overdrive sixth gear give the bike some pretty long legs, turning only about 3K at 70+MPH.

If you like the looks, you'll love owning this bike.

Quick question though, i totally overlooked it at the dealer, but when i got teh bike home i was checking out the brake fluid levels, and per the book the bike was super low on fluid!!! I put the bike on level surface, put her on the center stand, and pulled the handlebars all the way to each respective side to check out the level, and it was below the bottom line on the 'O' indicator!! I called the dealer to see what's up, and he stated that teh brake fluid should only be near the top line of the 'O' when the brake pads are new.

Being that my pads have some miles on them the current level should be fine, but if i wanted to top them off i should only fill it up half to the 'O' because if i do more they could actually overflow when i apply the brakes. I have a non ABS model. Does this make sense to anyone else? I always thought the brake fluid should be full, but i'm pretty new to motorcycle mechanics as a whole. If i should top it off, is there a special way to do it?

On the bonnie i just opened up that reservoir on the bars and poured away, is it simliar on the 1150r??? Also, is there a preferred brand and grade of brake fluid we all like to use on here??

Thanks guys!!! You're going to friggin' love that bike. I bought mine new in 04 and it's been a love affair ever since. I've ridden it all over the country and I commute on it daily. I think it may be one of the best all-round bikes ever made. It's also super easy to do your own maintenance.

Two things all R owners should do: Replace the cheap plastic quick disconnects (they are under the black plastic cover below the tank on the right side as you sit on it); and Cut the zip ties holding the wiring harness at the steering neck. They were mostly installed to tight. Move the bars to side to side and watch, you'll see what I mean.
